A girl’s senior soccer blitz was held in Irishtown Stadium, Ringsend on 19th October 2011. This competition, which was played as a 5-a-side blitz on Astro Turf pitches is the first girls Soccer competition organised by the SCC in over ten years. However, it is hoped that this will now become an annual event. Four teams from three colleges took part in the competition, Colaiste Íde, Crumlin, who entered two teams and Inchicore College.
The standard of soccer played in the competition was of a very high standard with Colaiste Íde and Inchicore College very evenly matched. Inchicore and Colaiste Íde battled for first place in the final with Colaiste Íde succeeding by a narrow margin of one goal. Kirsty Hynes for Colaiste Íde scored in the first half. Inchicore played a very defensive game and dominated most of the game by holding possession and controlling the ball, however, any chance they had of scoring was denied them by the Colaiste Íde goal keeper Emma McDonagh.
Many players stood out on the day, Clare Kinsella (Inchicore College) was outstanding and scored eight goals in the qualifying round. Jessica Lynch also stood out and scored five goals for Colaiste Íde, while the goal keeper for Crumlin A, Charlene McKenna stopped many players on several occasions from scoring what looked to be a certain goal. The referee’s selection to receive the player of the tournament trophy was Colaiste Íde goal keeper Emma McDonagh.
Phil Challoner and Rachel Donlon from the SCC sub-committee hope to have more colleges within the CDVEC competing in next year’s event.
