Badminton FinalsST KEVIN’S COLLEGE continued their dominance in the badminton arena when they captured the Intermediate Perpetual Shield for the third year in a row with Larkin Community College retaining the Junior title at last week’s CDVEC SCC schools badminton finals held at Colaiste Dhulaigh in Coolock.

St Kevin’s excelled against the hosts in the final, which consisted of boys and girl’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles games, with impressive winning performances from their captain Gavin Glennon, Mark Dalton, Poom Therapet and Joanne Kavanagh.

Dalton faced Dhulaigh’s captain Jamie Andrews in the opening singles game with Dalton taking the first set 11-4. Andrews upped his game in the second set but it was Dalton who narrowly won 12-10 to claim Kevin’s first win of the day.

Kavanagh doubled Kevin’s lead with an excellent showing in her singles match against Shelly Maughan winning 11-8, 11-6. Dhulaigh bounced back with Zita Collins and Jodie Byrne beating Kavanagh and Jodie Wade 11-8, 11-3 in the girls doubles.

Kevin’s knew a win in the boy’s double match would hand them the title with Dhulaigh needing to win to take it to the final deciding game. Glennon and Therapet pulled out all the stops against Dhulaigh’s Mark Lennon and Michael Spain for a deserved win.

Larkin took on Ringsend College in the Junior decider that went down to the wire with Larkin claiming a 3-2 win. Tied at two games apiece all eyes turned to the deciding game, the girls doubles.

Shauna Mitchell and Lauren O’Driscoll came from behind in the first set to beat Dhulaigh’s Hayleigh Byrne and Amy Tyrrell before powering their way to the title with an 11-5 win in the second. Earlier in the day Mitchell won her singles match with the doubles pairing of Larkin’s captain Robert McCabe and Anthony Hand doing likewise.
