VEC GIRLS SOCCER FINALS ROUND UP

COLAISTE DHULAIGH won the Perpetual Minor Shield with an awe-inspiring hat-trick from captain Courtney Higgins’ coupled with a dogged team performance in yesterday’s 3-2 win over the holders Larkin Community College at the VEC Girls Soccer Finals held in Colaiste Ide, Finglas.
Tied at 2-2, Higgins’ beat her marker out on the left wing before unleashing an unstoppable left footed low drive beyond Larkin’s goalkeeper Jennifer Corrigan to seal a remarkable comeback by the Coolock College.
Vicky County gave Larkin an early lead before Higgins’ who received the Player of the Tournament award opened her account, 1-1 at half time. Dhulaigh fell behind for the second time when Larkin’s captain and playmaker Emma Mullen found the net.
Higgins, Louise Field and Emily Garrigan combined well with Higgins’ slotting home a second equaliser before sealing an momentous win for the Northside college with her wonder strike in a pulsating game.
Larkin bounced back in the Junior Shield final, their captain Shauna Mitchell scoring four goals in their 5-2 win over Colaiste Dhulaigh.
First half goals from Dhulaigh’s Aisling Brady and Mitchell’s opener left the game tied 1-1 at half time. Mitchell claimed her hat-trick immediately after the restart with two excellent strikes. Dhulaigh pulled a goal back through their captain Carly Bollard.
However Larkin hit their opponents with two goals inside a minute from Player of the Tournament Mitchell and Nikita Murtaigh while Leah Halpin, Naomi Rock, Lauren O’Driscoll and Hayley Duffy played their part in Larkin’s success.
Larkin also retained the Perpetual Intermediate Cup with a comprehen
sive 8-1 win against Colaiste Eoin. Larkin’s Katie Gaffney and their captain Kirsty Hogan both shared the match ball with a hat-trick apiece, Jade Murphy got a brace.
Kelly Gerathy scored Eoin’s goal while Larkin’s Gugu Banda was awarded the Player of the Tournament.
