Larkin Community College, Kylemore College, Colaiste Eoin and Rathmines College finished top of the winner’s podium winning the overall schools title’s in various categories at last week’s CDVEC SCC Cross Country finals in Phoenix Park.
There were some excellent individual performances from several students with Nicholas Melia of Colaiste Eoin, Paul McDonnell Inchicore College, Tiffney Heary of Larkin CC and Crumlin College’s Nadia Egan the pick of the bunch.
Minor, Junior and the Intermediate girls’ teams took on the 1km course with great enthusiasm. The intermediate boys and senior girls race was 2km with the senior boys facing three laps of the open course.
The Intermediate race threw up an absorbing contest between Nicholas Melia and Colaiste Dhulaigh’s Kevin Darling. Melia had led from the start taking his lead into the final lap with Darling looming in the background.
Darling made his move down the back straight, Melia responded well to Darling’s attack by staying on the shoulder of the Colaiste Dhulaigh student.
With half a kilometre to go Melia made the all important move to finish strongly and claim gold, Darling took silver with his colleague Laurie Hamilton taking bronze.
Larkin’s Tiffany Heary came into the final bend in fourth place in the Girls Junior final, before, leaving all in her wake with an explosive finish to win gold ahead of Kylemore’s Natasha Finn O’Brien and Larkin’s Sinead Maguire.
Inchicore’s Paul McDonnell put in a flawless run to win the Senior Boy’s 3km race. McDonnell led from the onset taking a 150 metre lead into the second lap, a lead he never relinquished to finish ahead of his team colleague Finian Farrelly and Mark Shipley of Rathmines College.
Meanwhile Nadine Egan of Crumlin powered home in front of the Rathmines pairing of Emily Rochford and Leanne Fitzgerald respectively in the Girls’ senior race.
Larkin CC secured a hat-trick of wins in the girls’ schools titles competition securing gold in the minor, junior and intermediate sections. Kylemore’s Anastasia Timofejeua came home first in the intermediate event crossing the line ahead of Larkin’s Clare Hilliard and Shannon Thomas of Colaiste Eoin.
