After extra time

COLAISTE IDE  broke Inchicore hearts with a last grasp goal from Aoife O’Toole deep into extra time to win the Ladies Soccer Perpetual Shield for the first time at today’s final at the CDETB Sports Grounds in Terenure.

Penalties had looked on the cards as Inchicore’s defence had held firm throughout quashing all that Ide could throw at them time and time again before O’Toole unleashed a low powerful drive past Inchicore’s goalkeeper Naomi Kambidico.

“It was great winning the tournament but it was tough work but in the end we got there” said Ide’s delighted captain Louise Dalton.

It was double delight for Dalton who also walked away with the player of the tournament accolade “It’s great I wasn’t expecting it at all (winning the player of the tournament). But it was a great performance from all of the team”.

Despite having to battle against a very strong cross wind combined with lashing rain both teams pulled out all the stops to produce an engaging final. Ide playmaker Dalton led the charge while Orlaith White was simply outstanding at the heart of Inchicore’s defence.

Ide pressed forward from the outset with Simone Richardson forcing a good save from Kambidico before Stacey Gibney and Nikita Masterson pulled their chances narrowly wide. The best move of the first half involved Rebecca Kearney whose pass found Masterson who in turn set up Gibney but her shot flew over the bar.

Kambidico, who kept Inchicore in the game with some super saves, was tested again but held firm to take a clean sheet into the interval. After the restart Kambidico again denied Gibney, O’Toole and Dalton.

Inchicore had a terrific opportunity to score on the counter attack when Jan Bekombo fed Louise Gibbons who picked out Amy O’Connor whose shot beat Ide’s keeper Lynette Mooney only to come back off the post.

At the other end O’Toole skipped past two players before toe poking her effort just wide while Dalton could only hold her head in her hands as she watched her goal bound strike hit the post before the final whistle blew.

Ide continued to dominate possession in extra time but couldn’t by pass the trio of White, Bekombo and Lauren Clarke who put in some strong tackles and super blocks. However there was little they or Kambidico could do to stop O’Toole’s thunder strike in the dying moments to the elation of their coach Lisa Farrelly and mentor Paul Morrissey.

Ide had come through the group stage unbeaten with wins over Inchicore CFE and Pearse College and a draw against Liberties to top the table. While Inchicore finished second courtesy of wins against Pearse College and Liberties College to book their place in the final.
