map_reading_02Marino College topped the podium to win both the Boys and Girls Junior Pairs, with Youthreach Bonnybrook and North Great Georges Street doing likewise in the Intermediate categories, in last week’s finals of the VEC SCC Orienteering held at St Anne’s Park in Clontarf.

The students from the Fairview College successfully negotiated the 1.9km course while the Intermediate winners tackled a 2.7km route under almost perfect conditions in idyllic surroundings at the northside venue.

Eoin Browne, who organised the competition, congratulated the participants after the event “Well done to everyone who took part in the event, the total turnout was a very impressive 114 students. I hope everyone enjoyed the day and I hope to see you all at the next event”.

On a course that Browne and his colleagues set up, it combined general fitness with the skills of map reading, route finding and team work, the 114 students from several colleges including the overall winners, Ringsend College, Colaiste Eoin, Margaret Alyward, Colaiste Dhulaigh, Larkinmap_reading_01 Community College, North Great Georges Street and Youthreach Bonnybrook put their agility to the test throughout the competition.

On the parkland terrain which included tackling cross country, running paths, large flatland lakes, hills and road junctions it was the Marino pairing of Daniel O’Connor and Paul Ivanov who finished in a time of 19:00 minutes followed by Daniel Byrne and Dylan Bolger of Ringsend College in 23:20 with Marino’s Fawaz Alsafadi and Italo de Coelho securing third place in 26:00 minutes.

In the girls’ race Marino’s overall skills came to the fore once again with a winning performance from Cheryll Davie and Egshiglan Saule in 30:00 minutes. The Fairview College then claimed second place through Edrial Marina and Isabella Ayadi followed by Colaiste Eoin’s Jessica Smart and Aisling Kelly.

The Intermediate mixed singles and pairs 2.7km course threw up some interesting battle of the wits with the students of Youthreach Bonnybrook and North Great Georges Street sharing the spoils.

Youthreach Bonnybrook were unstoppable with a clean sweep in the singles competition. Lee Twomey took top honours in 32:00 minutes followed by Patrick Christopher 44:00 and Jane Dowd 55:00.

While the North Great Georges Street pairings of David Kerrigan and Sean Dwyer 38.40 and Shauna Phelan and Aimee Murphy 40:15 finished ahead of Bonnybrook’s Kyle McMahon and Gavin Smith.
