scc_olympic_handball_2009_31Marino College stepped up to the mark in the final of the CDETB SCC Olympic Handball Boys Junior Championship outwitting their opponents with a dazzling display as a brace from Marius Giurgila and Michael Spain’s goal sealed the win.

Guest of honour and referee for the day was Irish International Handball centre back Oisin O’BrannagainI think today went really well, the kids seemed to really enjoy themselves.

For a lot of them it was their first time playing and some of them really shone they were very good and I think they’ll be back for more so I’m very, very pleased with the day I have to say

With the Lughnasa club player adding “It’s a good honour to have to do this now with the kids because they really enjoyed it and it’s good to give something back to the sport and once the kids enjoyed it I’m happy”.

Larkin went into the final feeling confident having beaten Marino 3-0 earlier in the group stages but they were rocked by an early goal from Spain inside the first minute.

The Marino student then had two great opportunities to increase their lead but his first effort came back off the post before an outstanding save from Larkin’s goalkeeper Ciaran O’Driscoll seconds later denied Spain again.

At the other end of the court Larkin’s Peter Hopkins went in search of an equaliser and it was third time lucky for the north inner city student when his shot from out on the right beat Paul Judd in the Marino goal.

Inspired by Hopkins goal Larkin pressed Marino with Jake Hyland hitting the post, Hopkins effort was then saved by Judd before James Fitzgerald’s cheeky lob hit the bar.

Moments later Marino’s Marius Giurgila punished Larkin’s misses with a superb left handed shot scc_olympic_handball_2009_2from an acute angle out on the left as the game neared its end.

With time running out for the Champions Avenue school to find another equaliser it was Marino who had the final say when Giurgila rose high at the edge of the six metre unleashing a powerful shot into the net to start the celebrations for the Fairview College.

The Girls final petted the same colleges against each other with Larkin coming out on top retaining the title they successfully won in last year’s inaugural championship.

Larkin and Marino competed against each other in the best of three games with the Champions Avenue School winning two and drawing one.

All three games where very competitive with Larkin narrowly overcoming their opponents by 1-0 in the first two games thanks to two well executed goals from Katie Gaffney.

The third and final game was again a very tight affair with Larkin taking the lead when Jayde Murphy got on the end of Gaffney’s accurate pass.

But Marino responded with a well worked goal when Niamh Molloy fed Aoife O’Keefe with the game ending in a one all draw.
