3rd ANNUAL OLYMPIC HANDBALL COMPETITION

On Wednesday 13th October the 3rd annual CDETB Schools Olympic Handball Championships took place in St Michael’s Sports Centre, Inchicore.

Marino College retained the boy’s title in a thrilling final beating the gallant Larkin College 4-3. Marino opened strongly and quickly went two goals up before Larkin fought back to level the scores at 2-2.Marino then regained the lead when they were awarded a penalty. However, Larkin continued to press and were rewarded with a well deserved equaliser. In a tense last five minutes the experience and skill of Marino came to the fore and they clinched the trophy with a brilliant finish to a quick break. The 2008 winners St Kevin’s College were unlucky not to qualify for the final narrowing losing out twice by a single goal in the qualifying matches. Marino College completed the first ever Olympic Handball double by winning the girls title defeating the holders Larkin College 4-1. The final was more even than the score suggests.

olympic_handball_01Marino played good possession handball and took their goal scoring chances while Larkin could not find the net on the big day.

The overall standard of handball was high in both competitions. All the players and coaches enjoyed the afternoon and the games were played in a friendly yet competitive spirit. Congratulations to the Hermine O’Keefe and Neil Flaherty for preparing their players so well and to all the teachers and coaches for giving so generously of their time – Avis Reynolds, Valerie Woods, Lisa Doogan and Kevin Golden. Thanks also to the referee Tomas O’Brannagain who took time out from his job as the English language TV commentator for the EHF Champions League Olympic Handball matches.

Next year we hope to expand the Olympic Handball programme with the introduction of a tournament for first year students to encourage the participation of new schools.
