Minor Bouldering Competition

MARINO COLLEGE AND ST KEVIN’S COLLEGE finished on a high after it’s respective girls and boys teams won the overall schools bouldering titles after excelling at the wall climbing challenges at the recently held minor bouldering competition hosted by Coláiste Eoin in Finglas.

Marino’s trio of Sylvia Cobaci, Denisa Ghiuzan and Maruna Simandi topped the overall points table scoring a combined score of 144 after competing the ten various challenges in the individual pursuits on the climbing wall. St Kevin’s Paris Daly, Heleri Kriisa and Taylor Chubb finished second ahead of Coláiste Eoin’s Erica Omiagbo.

In the girl’s individual competition Marino’s Sylvia Cobaci won her first gold medal of the day after topping the points chart with a points tally of 64. Cobaci’s team mate Denisa Ghuizan came in second on 50 points followed by Coláiste Eoin’s Erica Omiagbo on 49 points.

St Kevin’s boys team of Charlie Quirke, Conor Burke, Claine Dunne scored a near perfect score with 294 out of a possible 300. Marino’s top three scorers of Marcel Kiwitt, Luke Bewley and Brian McCarthy took second place on a combined score of 254.With Coláiste Eoin’s Will Pendergast, Eric Omiagbo (twin brother to Erica Omiagbo) and Luke Taaffe finishing in third place.

Kevin’s Charlie Quirke was the stand out climber of the day with a flawless display of a perfect score of 100 to win the boys individual contest. Quirke’s team colleagues Conor Burke and Claine came joint second on 97 points ahead of Marino’s Marcel Kiwitt in third place on 95 points.

It was double delight for Marino College in the speed climb competition with Sylvia Cobaci and Marcel Kiwitt winning gold medals in the girls and boys respective finals.

Cobaci faced her colleague Denisa Ghiuzan after both students came through their relevant semi finals. After a close start Ghiuzan lost her grip giving Cobaci an early advantage. Despite Ghiuzan coming to terms with the towering wall it was Cobaci who held her concentration and nerve to reach the top ahead of Ghuizan claiming the minor speed climb title and her second gold medal in the process.

In the boys contest Kiwitt, like Cobaci, faced his colleague Luke Bewley. Both climbers started brightly before Kiwitt’s climbing skills came to the fore as the first year student built up a lead. Bewley gave his all however Kiwitt held out to win gold in the boys speed climb competition.
