The
annual Niall Smyth Memorial Bursary Award ceremony in Plunket
College saw 18 students from nine colleges receive funding to further
their sports and cultural careers. Amongst the recipients is Olympic boxing
hopeful Kellie-Anne Harrington, from North Great George’s
Street Youthreach, who is heading to the World Championship in Kansas
and hoping for the go-ahead for London from the Irish Olympic Committee.
Tenpin bowler, Aimee Kellegher, Crumlin College, is heading
to Las Vegas to the Women’s World Championships. Fellow Crumlin student,
Brian Keogh, is heading to canoe training camp in Hungary;
Debbie Edmonds and Janine Geoghgan are
using their busaries to fund Karate training in Spain. John Travers
of Inchicore is a promising athlete, who is going to the British Miler
clubs event hoping to make it onto the European track team. Fellow student
Catherine Rodger is toughing it out this August in the
Gael Force 6 Challenge in Mayo.
All of
the students are excellent representatives for our schools and country
and we are proud to support them.
"It's going to
be a real help because the wear and tear on all the equipment means you
have to keep buying it throughout the year. So it is a great thing to
be offered this and kick boxing is an important part of my life. It's
great to be acknowledged this way, it really means a lot,"
James Kelly, Senior All-Ireland Kick Boxing Champion 2009 from
Crumlin College.
"This will be an
adult competition. I've gone to the ECC, which is the adult European
Champions, and the standard is pretty high. But I have never gone to
a World Championship before so it's an extra boost getting this bursary,
definitely a big help."
Aimee Kellegher, who competed in this year's Women's World Championship
2009 - USA.
"I'm just
happy enough. I suppose it's better now that I have that little bit
more money, so I don't have to rely on my dad to get everything for
me. I can get the runners and the shorts without bugging him!"
Athlete John Travers from Inchicore College who participated
in the British Miler Clubs Event 2008 in the hope of making it onto
the European track team.
