Colaiste Ide, Presentation Terenure and Larkin Community College were crowned overall schools champions on the back of excellent performances in the pool at last week’s CDVEC SCC swimming gala at Ballyfermot’s Sport and Leisure Centre.
It was double joy for Colaiste Ide winning the boys’ and girls’ senior titles. Presentation Terenure took the girls’ top prize while Larkin boys’ were unstoppable with both colleges’ finishing top after combining together the scores of the minor, junior and intermediate categories.
Colaiste Ide senior girls’ team of Amy Kryd, Tina Donnelly, Aideen Walsh and Tracey O’Brien powered their way to victories, in the four by four freestyle and medley relays, on the back of individual gold medals in the backstroke (Kryd), freestyle (Donnelly), butterfly (Walsh) and breaststroke (O’Brien).
Ide’s boys’ senior quartet of Christopher Tobin, Mark Guiney, Geoff Gilhooly and Kevin Mulhair left all in their wake with effortlessness swims in the four by four freestyle and medley relays.
Tobin, Guiney, Gilhooly and Mulhair also motored to individual prizes earlier in the day in the breaststroke, freestyle, butterfly and backstroke respectively to see the Finglas College successfully retain both titles.
Presentation Terenure, who surprised everyone including themselves in defeating the holders Larkin at last year’s event, held their nerve to get the better of Larkin by a mere two points.
Pres’ Maebh Riordan was Terenure’s first student on the podium after beating Larkin’s Nikita Scully and Michaela McCarthy of Colaiste Dhulaigh in the junior backstroke.
Terenure’s Sarah and Katherine McCormack, Niamh Delmar, Laura Doyle picked up individual silver medals prior to Clara Moosa and Aisling Herlihy winning gold in the breaststroke and butterfly.
Pres’ team strength then came to the fore in the freestyle and medley relays winning four of the six titles up for grabs to become school champions for the second year running.
Larkin boys’ maintained their dominance in the water with terrific individual and team displays. In the boy’s freestyle competition Larkin’s Jordan Doody (minor), Robert McCabe (junior) and Shane Hamilton (intermediate) made it a hat-trick of wins.
Larkin added more honours with wins in the boys’ minor, junior and intermediate breaststroke through Timir Vorobjov, Jordan O’Connor and J P Lawless and it came as little surprise that Larkin also dominated the freestyle relay races.
However Marino College broke the mould by denying Larkin a clean sweep in the medley relays with impressive swims from Sean McDermot, Adam Doody, Dylan Joyce and Samuel Chovan in the intermediate event.
Others who had impressive wins included Larkin’s Greta Rasisyle, Shiree Fallon, Sinead Maguire and Casey Egan. Marino’s Bianca Dulav, Colaiste Eoin’s Lauren Geraghty, Charlie Murray of Kylemore College, Colaiste Dhulaigh’s Karl Gibbons, St Kevin’s Paddy Dent and Daniel Gallagher of Crumlin College.
