Swimming Finals

Presentation Terenure, Larkin Community College and Colaiste Ide topped the podium at last week’s CDVEC Sports and Cultural swimming finals held at Ballyfermot’s Sports and Leisure Center.

Swimming GalaThis year’s competition attracted the highest number of students, schools and colleges with students participating in numerous events from back stroke to breast stroke to freestyle and medley relays in a year that sees the City of Dublin VEC celebrate its 75th anniversary.

Led by Karen Ledgewidge Presentation Terenure captured the best overall girls school at minor, junior and intermediate levels despite some pre-race anxiety “Everyone came in very nervous, we didn’t think we were going to win anything to be honest” said Ledwidge.

“In the end we actually won and we’re just pleased that we did. We were just coming in giving our hopes and see what happens and it just went well and I thought we performed really well so we’re delighted.”

Despite their combined success Presentation’s Kate Hanlon, Patricia Pestrzech and Claire McGrath had to settle for silver in the back stroke as Larkin’s Nikita Scully, Jane Eyre and Sarah Murphy took gold at the minor, junior and intermediate categories in the first event of the day.

Larkin Community College’s Louis Bradley kick started their day that would conclude in winning the best overall boys school at minor, junior and intermediate, with gold in the minor boys back stroke, Colaiste Dhulaigh’s Ryan Nolan came second followed by Paul Ivanov of Marino College.

Patrick Dent of St Kevin’s College powered his way to victory in the junior boys back stroke before finishing second to Colaiste Eoin’s Stephen Geraghty in the intermediate contest.

Larkin and Presentation girls’ teams continued to do battle in the pool with Larkin’s Sinead Maguire narrowly beating Fatimah Barrett of Presentation in the minor freestyle before Barrett’s teammate Clara Moussa got the better of Larkin’s Sophie Ward in the intermediate race.

Colaiste Dhulaigh’s Shauna Langdon and Aishling Kelly of Colaiste Eoin entertained the crowd in a fiercely competitive junior race with Langdon’s strength coming to the fore in the final few metres to take gold.

Back in the boys competition Larkin continued to dominate winning two freestyle gold medals through Robert McCabe and Eddie Vlass with Marino’s Samuel Chovan swimming the perfect race in the intermediate freestyle final.

Swimming GalaThe breast stroke finals threw up some spirited winning performances the pick of the bunch coming from Presentation’s Laura Doyle, Reiltin Stanley and Catherine McCormack alongside Larkin’s Jordan O’Connor and Shane Hamilton and Oscar Chmielowski of St Kevin’s College.

Larkin rounded off a perfect day with their boys’ freestyle and medley relay teams unstoppable in the pool, their girls’ team won the minor titles with Presentation Terenure doing likewise in the junior and intermediate relay finals.

Colaiste Ide took the best overall schools title in the senior boys and girls categories walking away with a healthy medals tally at the end of the day.

Celine Nolan, Sharon O’Toole, Amy Koyd and Alison Kelly all won individual titles alongside John Kelly and Shane Drumm with Glen Predy, Morgan Ferris and Aoife Duffy joining their colleagues to make it a clean sweep across the boards in the freestyle and medley relay finals.
