Larkin Community College will take on Youthreach Northside in the VEC SCC Shelbourne Cup final after both teams came through last week’s group stage and semi final play-offs held in the VEC Sports Grounds in Terenure.
Going into this week’s final Larkin are looking to erase last year’s defeat by Colaiste Dhulaigh in the final while Youthreach Northside hopes are to reclaim the Cup they won in 2008.
In the first semi final of the day a last gasp winner from Larkin’s Gerry McHale, with virtually the last kick of the game, sealed a 1-0 win over St Kevin’s College after both schools had finished first and second in their respective groups.
In a tight affair both sets of defenders came to the fore throughout a scoreless first half and with very few clear cut chances for either side in the second a penalty shoot out was on the cards before Larkin’s Ross Purdy beat the offside trap with McHale duly tapping in Purdy’s cross from close range.
Kylemore College and Youthreach North contested the other semi final in an exciting game that ended 2-2 culminating in an even more dramatic penalty shoot out, which Youthreach won 8-7, with Aidan Doyle scoring the all important sudden death penalty.
Youthreach looked like they where going out of the competition when Kylemore’s Captain Paul Kavanagh slotted home from the penalty spot, after Yusuff Sanusi was brought down. Gary Darcy’s header soon followed with the Ballyfermot College taking a comfortable 2-0 lead into the break.
However a quick goal after the restart from Youthreach’s Christian Meehan threw the Northsider's a life line prior to David Gorman’s terrific equalising strike from 30 yards setting up a penalty shoot.
