Youthreach win 5-4 on penalties.
Northside Youthreach lifted the VEC SCC Shelbourne Cup after defeating Larkin Community College in a dramatic penalty shoot in last week’s final at the SCC Sports Grounds in Terenure.
Both side’s where tied at 3-3 at the end of full time and subsequent extra time failed to produce a winner leaving this year’s Shelbourne Cup to be decided on penalties. Northside Youthreach’s Jonathon Keogh stepped up to take their fifth penalty, if converted Youthreach would the 2010 cup winners.
Keogh missed but the referee’s assistant deemed that Larkin’s keeper Dean Brady had moved off his line prior to Keogh striking his spot kick with the referee ordering the penalty to be retaken.
This time around Keogh made no mistake blasting the ball straight down the middle giving Brady no chance. Afterwards Youthreach’s Manager Adrian Fitzpatrick expressed his delight at his team’s cup win
“To get to the final was great but then to go and win it was a real bonus but it’s for the players, the players were brilliant, I’m delighted with them and very, very proud of them” said Fitzpatrick.
The Cup winners showed their intentions straight from the kick off and where rewarded for their early dominance with a goal inside five minutes when Anthony Lunney’s free into a crowded penalty box ended up in the net courtesy of a deflection.
Larkin conceded a second shortly afterwards when Jay Doyle connected with Lee Twomey’s free heading the ball back across the face of the goal. Midway through the half and with Larkin still trying to get a foothold in the game Youthreach added a third with a brilliant half volley from Stephen O’Leary.
James McHugh and Ross Purdy tested Youthreach’s keeper Christopher Quinn with well struck shots but Quinn took off two fine saves to deny the Larkin students keeping their 3-0 lead intact at the break.
With a commanding lead Youthreach sat back giving Larkin possession of the ball before Larkin turned the game on its head with an amazing come back led by Larkin’s Graham Burke and Darren Scully in particular.
Scully was a constant threat out on the right wing setting up Purdy with an excellent cross into the box which the Belvedere player headed home. Larkin kept pushing forward and when Scully cut inside and let fly Quinn was unable to hold the winger’s shot.
Two minutes later Larkin’s remarkable comeback was accomplished with Burk
e’s excellent run down the left before crossing for Abdi Shakar to blast home the equaliser from close range.
Dylan Kearney had a great chance to win it for Larkin with the last kick of the game but he shot straight at the keeper and with no goals in extra time the final went down to a penalty shoot out.
