SCC Senior Golf Event

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Senior Golf EventA glorious day for a game of golf! With little wind and the course itself in excellent shape, what more could one ask for?

October 16th was the day for the Senior boys and girls SCC golf outing. Thanks to Michael Hunts excellent choice of course. His management and organisation (as well as a clear day) made for some spectacular golf shots at this years event.

Twenty four golfers made their way out to the Grange Golf Course, with five colleges represented in the competition, a record turn out for the event. This year we changed the format to a three person scramble dividing the combined handicaps by 6.

Whitehall’s Jim Mc Donnell noted that they had never won the cup since its introduction in 1985 and on the first tee was determined to rectify that statistic! As the first team home, Inchicore College set a respectable target of three under par with some excellent shooting from John Travers, Joss Heffernan and Glen Mc Grave. The ones to watch were a combination formed by two colleges - Luke O Reilly (7) Stephen Mc Gill (9) Rathmines College and the only female to turn up, Jade Breen (14), from Crumlin College. True to form, they posted a seven under par 61 to become leaders in the Clubhouse. Senior Golf Event

With eagerness we watched Whitehall’s trio Jim Mc Donnell (13) Laurence Fitzpatrick (13) and Paul Cooney (18) finish on the 18th with a par. Had they done enough to take the title for the first time? With a net score of 59 and two thirds I am delighted to announce Whitehall won this years Senior Boys and Girls SCC golf outing. Jim, the team captain and who played in last years event, had created history.

We also had a separate competition for 'nearest the pin' which was won by Alan Glen of Rathmines College. The award for the longest drive went to (that man again!), Jim Mc Donnell, rounding off a great day’s golf.

A special mention for David Morrissey and James Edwards (Rathmines) who although needed a break after nine showed great spirit in participation.

Many thanks to all the teachers involved in sending out the teams. Your work makes days like this the success that they are. I am already looking forward to next years event where I will be calling on you to send in your entries.
