The Sports and Cultural Council presented and ran its first multi-sport activity “The SCC Duathlon”. This Sprint Duathlon consisted of a 2.7 K Run, 12 K Bike section and finally another 2.7 K Run in the Phoenix Park on Wednesday the 14th October 2009. The facilities offered at the Phoenix Park and in conjunction with the helpfulness of the staff in the Office of Public Works (OPW), allowed us to present a fast but challenging course for this fledgling event.
John Travers (Inchicore College FE) steamed along the 2.7 K run and entered Transition in 00:08:15 and in 00:00:31 left to complete a challenging 12 K bike section. Noel Summers (Crumlin College FE) entered Transition next at 00:09:55 with John Maher (Inchicore College FE) hot behind him at 00:10:38. The other competitors from Inchicore, Crumlin and St. Kevin’s College all entered into transition with the first female Catherine Rodger (Inchicore College FE) entering 00:13:53 and the final competitor leaving Transition to begin the 12 K Bike section at 00:15:39.
The Bike section was hard fought! A mishap at the final sharp turn of his first lap, John Travers the race leader took a spectacular fall which could have ended this race for him and possibly his running season. Luckily, John quickly picked himself up and continued on his way and was first to rack his Bike into transition at 00:31:17and begin his final run. John Maher held on strong to second position and racked his bike at 00:35:28. Next into transition to rack his bike was Daniel Farnell (St. Kevin’s College) at 00:37:01 who had gained 4 places on the bike section to move into 3rd place. However, John O’Reilly (Inchicore College FE) started his final run at 00:37:38 and kept the pressure on. Catherine Rodger still held her lead for the females beginning her run at 00:46:52.
John Travers won with a great time of 00:41:10, second and third place went to John Maher and John O’Reilly respectively with good times of 00:48:20 and 00:50:07, giving Inchicore College FE a 1-2-3. Catherine Rodger is the first female finisher with a time of 01:02:44. The final competitor finished at a respectable time of 01:14:55 with a red face from a tough competition but with a smile on her face.
I have to thank all competitors for trying something new, as none of the competitors had done a duathlon before. It is hard for us to move out of our comfort zones. The event was well managed by the teachers of the colleges represented, serviced by Inchicore College Stage Craft students who assembled/dissembled the bike racks, marshalled, accurately timed with split and transition times where all done manually which is no easy task. Also a big thanks to the Sports Coaching classes 1 & 2 of Inchicore College.
