A combined college team from Crumlin and Inchicore, with a try in either half from Crumlin’s Paul Taylor, won the Perpetual Cup with a strong second half showing against Ballsbridge in last week’s CDVEC rugby sevens final at the CYM sports grounds in Terenure.

Crumin/Inchicore had come into the final on the back of a comprehensive win over the holders Colaiste Ide but took nothing for granted against a Ballsbridge team led by Daniel McGrogan.

Ballsbridge struck first when Scott Murphy cut through the Crumlin/Inchicore defence in the second minute. The Dublin 4 colleges’ lead was short lived however as Karl Segrave went over for Crumlin/Inchicore a minute later.

The combined colleges outfit raised their game putting their opponents on the back foot but Ballsbridge, with McGrogan, Rob Boyle and Daragh Kenna at the heart of their defensive play, stood firm.

Crumlin/Inchicore finally got the break through on the stroke of half time when Taylor scored his first try to lead 10-5 at the break.

The first half was a close competitive affair with very little between the sides yet the second half belonged to Crumlin/Inchicore whose strength and speed came to the fore adding three more tries to put the game beyond Ballsbridge.

A try apiece from Paul Heaney and Jeff Palmer inside a minute midway through the half gave Crumlin/Inchicore a commanding 20-5 lead. Ballsbridge’s McGrogan, Boyle and Eoin Ryan steadied the Dublin 4 team but they failed to threaten at the other end.

With three minutes left in the game Taylor registered his second and Crumlin/Inchicore’s fifth try to claim the Cup for the first time to the delight of their stand in coach Sabena Power.

“It’s was a fantastic performance from the players who represented both colleges. They really enjoyed playing alongside each other and to win the cup is a wonderful achievement” said a jubilant Power afterwards.
