Larkin Community College will take on Kylemore College in next month’s VEC SCC Intermediate Boys Basketball final after topping their respective groups in yesterday’s qualifiers held at Colaiste Dhulaigh in Coolock and Inchicore’s Sports Centre.
Larkin, with their captain Jonas Daujotas leading the charge, will face a competitive Kylemore outfit with star players Mbongo Antonio and Michael McDonnell impressive in their wins over Marino College and Colaiste Eanna.
Larkin proved too strong for Plunket College in their opening game with a comfortably 26-0 win. An earlier win by Colaiste Dhulaigh over Plunket College meant the winners of the final game between Dhulaigh and Larkin would advance to the final.
Early baskets from Larkin’s Daujotas and Dean Brady, who worked tirelessly throughout the game, were answered with a cool finish from Dhulaigh’s Glenn McCabe.
But Larkin pulled away with further scores from Brady, with Victor Williams assisting Brady, to lead 10-2 at half time.
The hosts had their fair share of possession but couldn’t convert it onto the score board while Larkin added more scores from Daujotas, Dean Hayden and a wonderful solo effort from Brady.
Dhulaigh’s efforts were finally rewarded with scores from Pierce Sommerfield and a great three point play from their captain Gavin Higgins but Larkin’s captain fantastic Daujotas saw out their 19-7 win with back to back baskets.
Meanwhile Presentation Terenure, with sharp shooters Sarah Fanning and Asma Nassir on board, and Larkin Community College will contest the Intermediate Girls final after successfully coming through their qualifiers at the Sports Centre in Inchicore.
