Reigning intermediate badminton champions St Kevin’s will face Marino College in next month’s semi final after topping the group in last week’s qualifying stage held at the Clogher Road college.

Having overwhelmed Ringsend College 5-0 in their opening game St Kevin’s faced Larkin Community College, who earlier beat Ringsend 4-1, in the deciding match in the battle for top spot.

Tied at 2-2 after four enthralling matches it came down to the girls’ singles contest between Kevin’s Michaela Furlong and Sarah Murphy of Larkin.

Furlong whitewashed her opponent 11-0 in the opening set; Murphy found her feet in the second before narrowly losing 11-8 as Furlong and St Kevin’s march on.

In the second qualifying group stage at Coolock’s Colaiste Dhulaigh the home side, led by their captain Jamie Andrews, advanced to the semi final where they’ll face a strong Larkin Community College outfit.

Andrew’s, who captained the junior side to success in last year’s competition, and his team comfortably beat Colaiste Eoin 4-1 in the first match.

The Coolock College were pushed all the way throughout the singles, doubles and mixed doubles games by a competitive Marino team but Dhulaigh held out to win 3-2 and top the group.
