Marino College booked their place in the VEC Girls Intermediate Soccer 6-a-side final by topping the group following an unbeaten run in last Wednesday’s qualifying games at Colaiste Ide, Finglas.
The North Strand College will take on Larkin Community College with Marino determined to make amends for their defeat at the hands of their neighbours and close rivals in the 2009 final.
Marino got off to the perfect start with a 4-0 win, with their top scorer Nikita Hutch unstoppable in front of goal throughout their opening game against Coolock’s Bonnybrook.
Hutch broke the deadlock after getting on the end of Kelsey Doyle’s accurate pass in the third minute. The Marino student added a second moments after Mariesa McCarthy set up the striker to tap home from close range.
Bonnybrook’s Shauna Kinsella and Becki Flynn were denied with excellent saves from Chelsea Spain with Marino leading 2-0 at half time. Hutch’s hat-trick after the restart effectively put the game beyond Boonybrook with the Marino student’s fourth goal rounding off a perfect performance.
Marino faced tougher opposition against North Great Georges Street Youthreach in their next fixture narrowly winning 4-3 in a tight, competitive game.
Youthreach opened the scoring through Danielle Hogg but goals from Marino’s Hutch and Spain, who reverted to playing outfield following her earlier exploits in goal, swung the game. Tara McCauley equalised for Youthreach with a superb effort early in the second half.
Zoe Whelan gave the north strand college the lead for the second time in an action packed game before Leanne Kearney looked like salvaging a point for Youthreach in the dying seconds until Spain fired home from a free with the last kick of the game.
Marino and Larkin then produced a great game of football playing out a 3-3 draw in a preview for next month’s final. Larkin had raced into a 2-0 lead through Kirsty Hogan and Donna Ward.
With half time approaching Spain pulled one back prior to Whelan, punishing Larkin’s missed chances, equalising on the stroke of half time. Ward’s second for the cup holders looked ominous for Marino but Spain won a share of the spoils with another last ditch effort.
Marino rounded off the day with 7-5 win over Colaiste Eoin with Hutch, Spain, McCarthy and Sheryl Grimes coming up with the goods while Alison Smart accounted for four of Eoin’s goals tally.
The holders Larkin finished second overall, a single point behind Marino. Their opening game ended 3-3 against Youthreach, they then defeated Colaiste Eoin 4-3, drew with Marino before an 8-1 win over Bonnybrook set up another cup showdown with Marino.
