Girls Junior Soccer September 2010Larkin Community College and Ringsend College will contest next month’s VEC Girls Junior Soccer 6-a-side final after coming through last week’s qualifying games held at Colaiste Ide’s all weather pitches in the heart of Finglas.

In a repeat of last year’s final the holders Larkin know they will face a tough task to retain the cup after Ringsend showed their hand by beating, thanks to a first half brace from their top scorer Chelsea Spain, their close rivals 4-3 in the opening group game of the afternoon.

Ringsend opened the scoring inside the first minute courtesy of an own goal from Larkin’s Gugu Banda before doubling their advantage when Niamh Barnes power driven free kick beat Laura Bradley in the Larkin goal.

The northside college pulled one back midway through the first half when at the second time of asking Jade Murphy slotted home. Ringsend’s response was swift with Spain’s wonderful double strike giving them a commanding 4-1 lead but Banda’s goal on the stroke of half time threw Larkin a life line.

After the break Larkin upped the tempo and where rewarded when Murphy scored her second of the game. The Larkin student had a great chance to equalise at the death but her shot was saved by Lara Corcoran. Girls Junior Soccer September 2010

In the second game Marino went head to head with Ringsend with last year’s finalists booking their place in the final with a comprehensive 12-4 victory as Spain scored four while Barnes and Hayleigh Byrne got a hat-trick apiece.

Ringsend raced into 3-0 lead through Spain and two from Barnes inside three minutes. Robyn Spain pulled one back for Marino prior to Spain and Barnes finishing the first half with a hat-trick each to lead 7-1.

Despite facing an up hill battle Marino kept to their game plan with Danielle McCauley scoring a brace the pick of them a stunning strike from long range before Jasmine Donovan added the fourth but it was to be Ringsend’s day.

The reward for the winners of the final game between Larkin and Marino would be a place in next month’s showdown against Ringsend with Larkin’s strength in dept instrumental in their 10-3 win.

Larkin’s Shiree Ward was the star of the first half scoring four goals with Murphy following in Ward’s footsteps after the break. Marino found the net through Robyn Spain and two well taken goals from Hollie Norman but its Larkin and Ringsend who march on towards junior cup glory.
