Larkin Community College were crowned Cup Champions on all fronts after winning the Intermediate, Junior and Minor soccer titles in yesterday’s VEC Girls 6-a-side finals held in Colaiste Ide, Finglas.
The intermediate showdown, a derby game between Larkin and Marino College, was the pick of the finals with extra time required after the game finished 4-4. With a penalty shoot out growing ever closer Larkin’s Nicole Dunne claimed her hat-trick with the striker first to react to Aishley Eyre’s shot to score the winner.
Larkin, with Chinwendu Vine inspirational around the pitch, went ahead with a fine finish from Michelle O’Brien in the fourth minute. Kelsey Doyle played her part in the Marino goal keeping Vine and O’Brien at bay with excellent saves before Eyre’s low drive doubled Larkin’s lead.
Marino’s response was swift with goals from Chelsea Spain, who had locked horns with Chinwendu all afternoon, and Nikita Hutch leaving it all square at half time. Hutch doubled her tally straight after the restart but Marino’s lead was short lived when Dunne found the net.
Spain then scored a stunning goal for Marino, worthy of winning any game, but there was to be one more twist in a pulsating game with Dunne getting the equaliser with the last kick of the game.
In the junior final Larkin’s captain Jade Murphy lifted the cup after a 5-3 win over Ringsend. Larkin had led 2-0 at the break with a deflected shot from Shiree Ward and a Katie Gaffney strike.
Murphy added a third with Laura Bradley pulling off some stunning saves to deny the Ringsend captain Niamh Barnes before Barnes strike partner Sarah Cleary scored a stunner for the Southside School.
Further goals from Ward and Shauna Mitchell handed Larkin the Cup but not before Cleary scored another pile driver with Barnes, who was presented with the junior player of the tournament, adding Ringsend’s third.
Larkin’s Shauna Towell was the star of the show in the minor final scoring an incredible seven goals in their 11-1 win over Ringsend. Four first half goals from Towell and Leah Halpin’s strike gave Larkin a commanding leading with Nessa O’Reilly scoring for Ringsend.
Ringsend refused to throw in the towel with Jean Crombie, Laura Cummins, O’Reilly and Leanne Ward playing their part but Larkin’s strength in dept proved the difference with second half goals from Towell, Halpin and Lauren Lawless sealing the win.
STAR OF THE WEEK
CHINWENDU VINE
- LARKIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Larkin Community College’s Chinwendu Vine put in top class performance as Larkin beat their neighbours and close rivals Marino College 5-4 in yesterday’s VEC Intermediate Girl 6-a-side final at Colaiste Ide, Finglas.
Vine’s led from the front covering every inch of the pitch, picking out her colleagues with precision, setting up Michelle O’Brien with a pin point pass for the opening goal and never shying away from a tackle in a highly charged derby game.
And if you consider Vine has virtually played little or no football since sustaining a serious ankle injury last year at a time when the then St Francis striker had just been selected for the Irish U-17 squad her performance was a truly remarkable one.
