Junior Girls Gaelic Football Blitz Final
Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 - By Neil Flaherty
The 2009/2010 Girls Gaelic Football competition took place on Wednesday the 21st of April at the VEC Sports grounds in Whitehall. Four teams entered the competition this year and all those involved enjoyed a hugely enjoyable day in beautiful weather.
The competition was run on a league basis with all teams playing each other. Last years winners Marino College and Presentation College Terenure were the two dominant teams on the day and they both secured comfortable victories over Colaiste Eoin and Colaiste Dhulaigh.
Marino and Terenure faced each other in the final game of the day and it was a terrific game of football. Marino made a great start but Terenure gradually got into the game and led by three points mid way through the second half. Danielle McCarthy of Marino then scored an excellent goal to level the game and it looked as if Marino would retain the trophy. However, Terenure rallied again and produced a storming finish to eventually run out winners by five points.
After the final game the SCC Girls Gaelic Cup was presented to the captain of the Presentation team. This year’s event was a great success and all games were played in a very sporting manner and all those who participated enjoyed the day.
I would like to thank the teachers and students from the competing schools who made the day a success and thanks also to our referees Harry Lambe and Robert Farrelly.
