Inchicore Team OneInchicore College Team One defended the Rita Clifford Trophy but where pushed all the way by Colaiste Ide of Finglas West in the final of the SCC VEC Senior Girls Gaelic Football Blitz.

Last week’s tournament at the VEC sporting grounds in Terenure threw up some fine flowing football with teams Inchicore College One, Colaiste Ide, Inchicore College Two and Crumlin College all competing.

Led by Dublin’s Ailish McKenna, who put the recent disappointment of their narrow All-Ireland defeat to Cork aside to wear the black and amber of Inchicore, it was a great event overall.

“I think it was brilliant, I was here last year and I just think the atmosphere is brilliant with the girls and it’s just a bit of fun. Colaiste Ide put it up to us again this year just like last year, they’re a very good team and near the end anyone could have won it”.

Before the St. Brigid’s club player added “We’re delighted to win, yeah definitely, two years in a row, sadly we won’t be here next year but hopefully the college will come back and do the same again”.

Colaiste Ide should have taken the lead straight from the throw in but Leanne May’s low shot came back off the foot of the post, seconds later their captain Rachael Byrne, a colleague of McKenna on the Dublin panel, shot wide.

With blue skies above Inchicore punished the Finglas West College’s earlier misses by putting 1-2 on the score board inside two minutes of play. Two points courtesy of Grainne Gaffney and Amy Moran before Nicola Duffy, set up by an excellent hand pass from McKenna found the net from close range.

McKenna and Duffy where combining well around the field of play and between them they registered another point from open play. Inchicore opened their scoring with Kelly Moran pointing to trail by 0-1 1-3 at the break.

Amy Moran set up Duffy, who finished with 1-2, for her final score of the game before Colaiste Ide hit back with 1-1 to trail by just two points midway through the second half. Girls Gaelic Blitz

Sinead Cuminsky, who was at the heart of Ide’s attacking play throughout saw her low hard drive nestle in the left hand corner of Tallon’s goal. Kelly Moran then added her second point and should have given the Finglas West College the lead but her goal bound shot was superbly blocked.

With Inchicore on the back foot a wonderful point from an acute angle from Joleen Horey swung the game back in their favour and despite a fine solo run and score from Ide’s Cuminsky Inchicore held out.

Crumlin College’s goalkeeper Eibhlin Bracken was awarded the Player of the Tournament for her outstanding display throughout the tournament.
