With the sun shinning high in the sky girls’ teams representing Ringsend, Larkin Community College and Marino College took to the astro pitches in Ringsend Park to compete in the SCC Minor, Junior and Intermediate Girls Soccer Finals.
The Intermediate final saw Larkin take on Marino with both teams competing evenly throughout the game.
But it was the north inner city school’s clinical finishing in front of goal that proved the difference as they claimed the trophy for the second year running overcoming Marino by 5-2 to the delight of their captain Michelle O’Brien.
“Well played by all my team mates, Larkin came out on top and went on to win the trophy for the second year in a row”.
Meanwhile the Minor final ended in an exciting penalty shoot between Ringsend and Larkin with the hosts overcoming Larkin 2-1.
In a very competitive first half neither team could break the deadlock with both keepers Lara Corcoran (Ringsend) and Ciara Moore (Larkin) pulling off some great saves.
Both sets of players again gave it their all in the second half with player of the match Niamh Barnes of Ringsend being denied by Moore on several occasions while Corcoran stood firm for Ringsend.
Extra time failed to break the stalemate before Ringsend held their nerve in the penalty shoot out to claim victory.
Described by Eithne Davey, Chairperson SCC as “by far the best game of the day” Larkin lifted their second trophy of the day overcoming Ringsend 3-2 in a pulsating Junior final.
It was a high intensity game from start to finish with non stop end to end action as both sides gave it their all throughout the match.
Ringsend where leading 2-1 when Andrea Rooney equalised for Larkin, it was a divided celebration for the Ringsend native scoring against her friends and neighbours but it was all taken in good heart by all involved!
For the second time in the day outstanding goalkeeping performances this time from Laura Bradley (Larkin) and Ashley Coughlan added hugely to an already highly charged and entertaining game before Larkin got the all important goal to lift the trophy.
