The second SCC Duathlon took place in the Phoenix Park on Wednesday, October 13th, 2010. The field was quite small this year although on the day the weather was superb, thus providing ideal conditions for this race.
Inchicore College students had a white wash this year having secured 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, and justly collecting the well deserved spoils.
John Maher took off strongly with John O’Reilly keeping very close behind. We recognised these two competitors who gave a good account in last year’s inaugural Duathlon. Gareth Guiney, Fintan Steers, Robert Neff following on behind the leaders this was their first taste of this type of multi-sport event, they admitted that it was “Very tough!” Although lap times were slower than last years there was a great battle between John Maher and John O’Reilly.
John Maher managed to stretch his lead by 2 minutes by the end of the bike section. Even though John O’Reilly took off on the last leg of the final run section, John Maher, the eventual winner was able to match this and increase the lead by a further 25 seconds in a very reputable time of 46:14. In second place in a time of 48:39 was John O’Reilly. In 3rd place was Gareth Guiney with a time of 53:45 followed by Robert Neff coming in reputable fourth place in a time of 54:25. Unfortunately, Fintan Steers had to withdraw, claiming that it was just ‘too tough’.
Inchicore Sports Coaching students, acted in the vital positions of traffic and transition marshals, with 4 students having probably the most important job of time marshals. All students did their assigned jobs excellently and the race could not have taken place without their involvement. I would like to thank the two students who had to rent their bike to take place in the duathlon. Well done to all who participated!
