Larkin Community College retained the VEC SCC Bohemian Shield with a resounding win over their arch rivals Colaiste Dhulaigh in last week’s final held at the SCC Sports Grounds in Terenure.
With Adam Kelly’s goal scoring boots on fire, hitting four in total along side Gareth Rock’s excellent performance on the ball with Larkin’s captain at the heart of their play Colaiste Dhulaigh simply had no answer despite their best efforts.
A first half hat-trick from Kelly before adding his fourth after the break and subsequent goals from Ryan Taffe, Conor Cullen and Rock saw the north inner city school lift the Shield defeating Dhulaigh in the final for the second year running.
Larkin got off to the perfect start with Peter Hopkins inch perfect pass to Kelly splitting open Dhulaigh’s defence with the Stella Maris player calmly sliding the ball past Dhulaigh’s keeper Darren Callaghan.
Two minutes later the holders doubled their advantage with Hopkins once again instrumental in Kelly scoring his second putting in a great corner which the centre forward headed home from the far post.
Somewhat shell shocked by Larkin’s flying start Dhulaigh’s Captain Glen McCabe urged his players to stay calm as they put their best spell of the half together. Reese Sommerfield cut in from the left but his low drive was gathered by Aaron Godfrey in the Larkin goal.
McCabe had three good chances for Dhulaigh but the midfielder’s first effort never looked like threatening Godfrey, his second, a free from the edge of the box, had the Larkin keeper beaten but it grazed the top of the bar.
Dhulaigh’s captain was then denied a certain goal with an outstanding save from Godfrey with the Larkin keeper getting his hand to McCabe’s brilliant strike to knock it onto the post.
Larkin punished Dhulaigh’s missed opportunities just before half time when Kelly’s strength on the ball set the Larkin student up to claim his hat-trick taking a 3-0 advantage into the break.
Dhulaigh continued to push forward after the restart but Larkin’s back four of Hopkins, Darren Towell, Malcolm McDonald and Shane Hamilton stood their ground with Kelly effectively ending the game as a contest when the striker chipped Callaghan from close range.
Kelly then turned provider with a cheeky back heel to Taffe before the Kevin’s player scored Larkin’s fifth Cullen added their sixth inside a minute with Rock fittingly scoring with the last kick of the game.
Earlier in the day Colaiste Ide won the Belgrove Cup with a 1-0 win over Pearse College with a first half headed goal from Ide’s Erick Browne.
