Junior Boys Soccer - Bohemian Shield and Shelbourne Cup

By Louise Browne

Bohemian Shield - Wednesday, 13th April, 2011

- LARKIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE 4
- COLAISTE DHULAIGH 2

LCC Winners Bohemian ShieldLARKIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE won the Bohemian Shield thanks to a brace from Sean Gorman and a goal apiece from Eddie Sirbu and Eddie Vlas in last Wednesday’s final at the VEC SCC Sports Ground in Terenure.

Gorman, who plays for Home Farm, left no blade of grass unturned throughout a lively final played with quality and commitment under blue skies despite having to contend with a strong cross wind.

Larkin’s midfield duo of Roy Byrne, who captained the north inner city college and Sirbu alongside wingers Jordan Lee O’Connor and Austin Lynch combined well across the park supplying Gorman and his striking partner Eddie Vlas with excellent accuracy.

Larkin opened the scoring on 12 minutes when Sirbu’s fine pass opened up Dhulaigh’s defence with Gorman coolly slotting home past Reece Somerfield in the Dhulaigh goal.

Somerfield was the busier of the two keepers and kept his side in the game with some fine saves. But there was little the Dhulaigh student could do to save Sirbu’s 30 yard effort that gave Larkin a 2-0 half time lead.

Sirbu and Gorman combined again but Gorman’s strike came back off the post. Dhulaigh had their best chance of the game when their captain Richie McDonagh’s cross set up nicely for the incoming Ryan Brady but the striker squandered the opportunity.

Larkin’s third came courtesy of Vlas’ low drive before Royston Fitzgerald scored a deserved goal for Dhulaigh. Gorman sealed Larkin’s win with a tap in prior to McDonagh’s consolation goal for Dhulaigh.

Shelbourne Cup - Wednesday, 13th April, 2011

- COLAISTE DHULAIGH 2
- YOUTHREACH NORTHSIDE 0

CD - Shelbourne Cup Winners 2011COLAISTE DHULAIGH lifted the Shelbourne Cup after Dylan Desmond scored a goal in each half in a competitive game as both teams battled it out for top honours in last week’s final held at the VEC SCC Sports Ground in Terenure.

Desmond opened the scoring in the 19th minute after fine work from Darren Field set up the striker. With time running out Youthreach piled on the pressure but were caught on the counter attack when Desmond latched onto Dylan Coyle’s perfect pass to calmly slot home his second for the Coolock school.

Youthreach will feel somewhat aggrieved having had the lion’s share of the possession to come away empty handed. But Dhulaigh’s back four of Kevin Curtis and Pearce Somerfield, Gavin Higgins and Wayne McCann stood firm and Chung Tai Hand, who kept a clean sheet throughout the tournament, was once again outstanding in goal for Dhulaigh.

Youthreach’s best chances of the first half fell to Jamie Leaper, Evan Denis and Kevin Darling with Hand denying all three with fine saves to take a 1-0 advantage into the break. Back to back efforts from Sean Woods were brilliantly saved by Hand as Youthreach upped the tempo after the restart.

Dhulaigh were content to sit back and hit their opponents on the break and came close to doubling their lead through Desmond and Dale Franzoni. With Youthreach pushing for an equaliser to take the game into extra time Desmond put the game beyond any doubt handing Dhulaigh the Shelbourne Cup.
