A feast of basketball was on show as teams from Larkin Community College, Presentation Terenure, Colaiste Dhulaigh, Kylemore College, Colaiste Eoin, Inchicore College and Crumlin College battled it out for top honours in yesterday’s CDVEC SCC schools basketball finals in the basketball headquarters at the Tallaght arena.

Larkin Community College secured a hat-trick of wins, Presentation Terenure tasted double success winning the Perpetual Shield in the girls’ junior and intermediate finals while Kylemore College, Crumlin College and Inchicore College captured the remaining titles.

The minor boys’ and girls’ teams kick started the day with Larkin contesting both finals. Spurred on by their captains and star players Shane Craig and Lauren Lawless, the north inner city school powered their way to a unique double against Colaiste Dhulaigh and Presentation Terenure.

Dhulaigh’s slow start in the boys’ final was punished by Craig and Timir Vorobjov’s sharp shooting before Tony Shields and Martin O’Dwyer replied for Dhulaigh.

But there was to be no defensive rest bite for Dhulaigh as Larkin piled on the pressure seeing out the game 24-4 with Craig’s personal tally of 16 points instrumental in Larkin’s victory.

Larkin girls’ proved too strong for Pres’ as Lawless, Keit Valk and Leah McNevin were on fire throughout their 16-4 win despite a brave performance from Pres’.

Pres’ then faced Colaiste Dhulaigh in the girls’ junior final determined get into winning ways and with Jill Rogers firing on all cylinders the Southside School saw off a spirited Dhulaigh side 16-5.

Basketball Finals Feb 2011Rogers, Asmar Nassir and their captain Sophia O’Connor combined well around the boards while Dhulaigh’s captain Shauna Lyndon kept the Coolock side in touch early on with a sublime three point play; but Pres’ never looked back after the interval to celebrate their first win of the day.

Kylemore College and Colaiste Eoin went head to head in the boys’ junior finale with Kylemore taking the Perpetual Shield on a score line of 17-2. In a one sided affair Kylemore were quick of the mark through Fergal Whelan, Anthony Hammond, Jack McDonald and Keith Swaine.

Alex Novak put Colaiste Eoin on the score board but the Ballyfermot College were relentless in their offensive play as Hammond put in a MVP display to seal the win for Kylemore.

The boys’ intermediate game between Larkin and Kylemore was a much closer clash before Larkin pulled away in the final quarter to claim their third win of the day 15-6.

Michael Larkin and Mbongo Antonio had put Kylemore 6-2 ahead, Larkin fought back with baskets from Dean Hayden and Sean Fox to square matters up 6-6 at the interval.

Larkin’s Captain Jonas Daujotas superb offensive and defensive play and back to back shoots from Victor Williams with time running out handed Larkin the honours. Pres’ wrapped up the intermediate final beating Larkin 22-10.

Crumlin College narrowly defeated Inchicore College 13-11 in the senior girls’ game with Crumlin’s Shauna Homan getting the vital scores in a tight game that went right down to the wire.

Meanwhile Inchicore College’s superiority, with excellent performances from Eoghan Moore and Ovidijis Rafrusk, overwhelmed Colaiste Dhulaigh 37-11 in the boys’ senior contest.
