- SCC Basketball Senior Boys Final -
Crumlin CFE 30
Inchicore CFE 26
Crumlin’s captain Gary O’Toole and John De Lara excellent play under the ring proved the turning point in a game that the Crumlin road college where always chasing from the off to win against a much fancied Inchicore outfit in the CDVEC SCC Senior Boys Basketball final at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
With time running out and trailing 14-23 O’Toole stepped up to the mark scoring back to back scores before a huge three pointer from Darren Bowes cut the deficit to two.
A basket a piece from De Lara, who was awarded the MVP and Simas Dobrovolskis, gave Crumlin a 27-26 advantage with a minute left on the clock.
It was the first time Crumlin had taken the lead in the game and with the momentum firmly in their camp they held their nerve to see the game out making up for last year’s final defeat at the hands of Colaiste Ide.
Inchicore had started strongly with Josh Heffernan leading the charge scoring nine of his side’s 15 points tally in between John Travers and Shane Jordan adding baskets as they dominated around the court leading 21-10 at the interval.
After the restart it was Crumlin who were quickest out of the blocks, seemingly with nothing to lose, taking the game to Inchicore as their opponents struggled to match the high tempo of their first half performance.
Led by O’Toole Crumlin’s confidence grew within the team and they went from strength to strength punishing their opponents with excellent offensive play in addition to stifling Inchicore’s play under the ring.
Inchicore will be disappointed to have let a game they had controlled for long periods slip away but Crumlin, who refused to throw in the towel, got their just reward with additional scores from Dobrovolskis, O’Toole and Jason Hoey in a highly entertaining final.
- SCC Basketball Intermediate Boys Final -
Plunket College 7
Kylemore College 6
Plunket College retained their VEC SCC Intermediate Boys crown when Wesley Delaney calmly sunk his free throw with two seconds left on the clock breaking Kylemore hearts in the process at basketball headquarters in Tallaght.
With the game level at 6-6 a piece and with over time on the cards Delaney, having missed his first effort, composed himself before sinking the all important winning score to start the celebrations among the team and supporters alike.
Led by Jordan Lawlor, the Plunket student also walked away with the MVP award, Daniel Howard and Delaney Plunket’s had got the better of their opponents in a very tight game, one that could have gone anyway with little between the sides.
An early lay-up from Rob Quinn opened the scoring for Kylemore before Delaney’s effort squared the game. Both sides fine defensive play came to the fore keeping the score board some what redundant.
That changed however with Howard lighting it up with a sublime shot for Plunket’s prior to coolly doubling his points tally moments later. A clinical finish from Kylemore’s Scott Cashin cut Plunket’s advantage to 6-4 at the break.
Following the restart Plunket’s failed to extend their lead with Howard, Delaney, Keith Doherty and Michael Bowes attempts from the free throw line falling short of the target.
With fifty seconds left on the clock Quinn punished the Whitehall College’s earlier misses squaring up the game with a fine shot but it was Delaney who had the final say for the eventual winners.
VEC SCC Basketball Finals Round Up
Inchicore CFE Senior Girls celebrated victory over Crumlin CFE with a narrow 24-21 win over their close rivals in the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght.
Crumlin dominated early in the game as Inchicore struggled to find their feet but the Emmet Road College clawed their way back into the game taking a two point advantage into the break.
After the restart Inchicore’s Amanda Duffy and Crumlin’s Hannah Dixon traded points. Leading 19-18 and with the clock ticking down Inchicore’s Catherine Rodgers three point play swayed the game in their favour.
Crumlin’s response was swift with Kathryn Larkin and Jamie Homan scores leaving one point between the sides.
However Duffy’s effort in the dying seconds rapped up the win for Inchicore and with Shelly Behan being awarded MVP the disappointment of last year’s final defeat was forgotten.
