ST KEVIN’S COLLEGE maintained their dominance with top class performances to win the Intermediate Perpetual Shield for the second year running in yesterday’s Dublin VEC schools badminton finals.

Kevin’s, with faultless displays from their captain Bilal Iqbal and Michaela Furlong, were crowned champions after seeing off Larkin Community College and Colaiste Dhulaigh at the Clogher Road College’s Sports Hall.

The Crumlin College knew nothing short of a defeat against Coolock’s Colaiste Dhulaigh would retain the Shield after beating Larkin CC earlier in the day.

With two matches remaining and holding a narrow 2-1 lead Furlong’s exceptional play in her singles match two set victory over her opponent Stephanie Thompson handed Kevin’s the title.

The opening contest was a clash of the team captain’s Iqbal and Dhulaigh’s Jamie Andrews. Iqbal held his nerve when the pressure was on winning the best of three sets by 11-8, 11-8, Andrews for his part contributed to a hugely entertaining match.

Badminton Finals 2010Kevin’s Boys doubles pairing of Gavin Gleenon and Victor Aremy pulled off a great win against Andrews and Mark Browne with the Crumlin duo unstoppable around the court to win11-6, 11-1 to double their lead.

After Furlong’s triumph in the singles match sixth year students Iqbal and Furlong, playing side by side for the last time, fittingly rounded off the day with more success in the mixed doubles match.

This year’s Junior Perpetual Shield went to Larkin CC after they dethroned the reigning champions Colaiste Dhulaigh 3-2.

With four games played and tied at two games each it went down to the mixed doubles match with Larkin’s Eddie Sirbu and Shauna Mitchell facing Declan Brennan and Michaela McCarthy of Dhulaigh.

Larkin claimed the first set 11-7 before Dhulaigh leveled matters up in the second by the same score line.

With excellent rallies of play in the third set and the scores tied at no less than seven times the outcome of the game was impossible to call.

Leading 11-10 McCarthy served for the match but Brennan’s responded with a superb point. However Brennan failed to hold his serve leaving Sirbu to serve up the winning point in their 13-11 victory.
