BadmintonCoolock’s Colaiste Dhulaigh’s journey back across the city after last week’s CDVEC SCC Badminton finals in St Kevin’s College, Crumlin was made all the sweeter by winning the Junior Perpetual Shield which according to their captain Jamie AndrewsIt was exciting to win it and the team played brilliantly”.

Dhulaigh faced Marino College in the final with Andrews leading the charge in the boys’ singles game against Marino’s Paul Judd. Andrews comfortably won the first set by 11-2 but Judd bounced back with a hard fought win in the second.

In the deciding set Andrews took an early 6-2 lead and despite a brief fight back from Judd the Coolock student held his ground to deservedly win the match.

The Girls singles final between Marino’s Diana Zahari and Dhulaigh’s Catherine Kelly was a close affair with Zahari holding a slight advantage throughout finally overcoming her opponent by 11-8 and 11-7 in her two set win to level the scores.

Dhulaigh’s Boys doubles pairing of Paul Duffy and Declan Brennan took on Marino’s Melvin Jumungay and James Reynolds in an exciting encounter with both pairings contesting every shot around the court with great enthusiasm.

The first set went to Dhulaigh; Marino then squared matters up in the second before the Barryscourt Road School put one hand firmly on the Shield going into the final game of the day the mixed doubles.

Andrews and Shauna Landon went head to head with Marino’s Judd and Shannon Byrne with little between the sides but with the score at 5-5 Dhulaigh lifted their game to score six unanswered points to seal the first set by 11-6.

BadmintonMarino raced into an early 4-0 lead in the second but Andrews and Landon didn’t panic instead they slowly clawed their way back into the game with excellent offensive play. With the set tied at 7-7 and everything to play for Dhulaigh got the all important points to hand their captain Andrews and his team the well deserved silverware.

On their home turf St Kevin’s College triumphed again this time winning the Intermediate Perpetual Shield.
