Athletic Finals

Larkin Community College departed Santry’s Morton Stadium laden down with silverware after retaining the Hannigan and Robinson Cup following last Friday’s VEC Sports and Cultural Council (SCC) Track and Field Championships 2010.

Larkin’s incredible achievement was made even sweeter when Clara Hilliard and Rares Marin were awarded the ‘Athlete of the Meet’ awards. Hilliard, picking up the accolade for the second year running, spoke of her delight afterwards

“I’m dead proud after winning the award, dead chuffed really, especially having won it last year it’s just brilliant to win it again” said Hilliard.

The Raheny Shamrock athlete’s gold in the high jump, silver in the 100m behind her school colleague Gugu Banda and an additional winning performance from Hilliard, Banda, Andrea Rooney and Jane Eyre in the 4x100m relay final contributed to Larkin’s success in the Junior Girls Shield.

Larkin’s hat-trick in the high jump categories was completed when Tiffany Heary (minor) and Jade Carrig (intermediate) saw off the challenge of Ringsend’s Amy Tyrell and Sinead McDermot of Marino College.

In the senior boys’ javelin final Marin won gold and received his ‘Athlete of the Meet’ award for being a good athlete and encouraging and coaching other participants in the javelin competition.

The senior long jump was a one two podium finish for Larkin’s Paul Bradley and David Dunne either side of their colleagues Silviu Aghnita and Eddie Sirbu successes in the minor and junior long jump finals.

In almost near perfect weather conditions other athletes who stood out on a day included Coláiste Eoin’s Nicholas Melia with the Fingallians AC runner leaving all in his wake in the minor boys 100m final.

Athletics FinalsHowever the recent recipient of the ‘SCC Niall Smyth Bursary’ award had to settle for second behind Larkin’s Austin Lynch in the minor boys 1500m final. Melia then doubled his medals count taking silver and bronze in the relay finals.

Coláiste Dhulaigh’s Martin Collins excellent individual display in both the minor shot putt and the high jump was unstoppable with the Coolock student walking away with gold in both events.

Ringsend Technical Institute dominated the girls’ junior and intermediate javelin and shot putt finals with Sarah Cleary, Rebecca McLoughlin, Aoife Cunningham and Laura Crombie all winning gold medals.

Back on the track the 4x100 relay finals got under way with Coláiste Dhulaigh getting the better of Kylemore College in the girls minor final. Kylemore bounced back in the next race winning gold in the boys’ minor final.

Dhulaigh added their second title taking the junior boys final Larkin won the junior girl’s prize. Ringsend denied Dhulaigh a third success finishing first in the girls intermediate final with Kylemore rapping up another win in the intermediate boys final.

Larkin then stepped up to run the perfect race in both the male and female millennium relay finals rounding off a wonderful day of track and field events for the double Cup winners.

However Larkin didn’t have it their own way in the staff relay race when Kylemore College narrowly defeated the holders to win the Gabrielle Coates Trophy.

In the last event of the day to celebrate the SCC 75th Anniversary the Ski relay team challenge, were a teacher and student paired up to race 25 metres each over 100m on wooden skis using ropes instead of sticks, was won by the students and teachers of Margaret Alyward to finish off a fantastic day of athletics.

Special thanks must go to the SCC Executive Committee, the Athletics Sub-Committee and all the match officials for their enthusiasm and dedication.
