The Belgrove Cup Soccer Tournament was held in the VEC Grounds in Terenure on Wednesday 30th April. A total of 6 teams entered the competition. There were 2 teams from Colaiste Ide along with one team from Rathmines College, Pearse College, Killester College and Crumlin College.
This one day tournament is a great sporting day for the PLC Colleges and we would welcome teams from all of the other PLC Colleges to join us in future editions of the Belgrove Cup.
The teams were divided into 2 Groups with Crumlin College winning Group A and Colaiste Ide B winning Group B.
Rathmines College beat Crumlin College on penalties in one semi-final whilst Colaiste Ide A beat Colaiste Ide B on penalties in the other semi-final. Both semis had finished 0-0 after normal time.
The final which was 15 minutes a side was played on a newly prepared pitch on the Gaelic field in the VEC Grounds in Terenure. Many thanks to Nicky and the ground staff in Terenure for preparing all of the pitches. It was great to see all 5 soccer pitches in Terenure in use at the same time on a beautiful sunny day.
On a windy day Rathmines captained by Sean Ronan started the stronger and their impressive forward Deano (No 10) had a chance early on that was saved by the Colaiste Ide goalkeeper. Shortly after the Rathmines No 4 shot over the bar following a corner. Colaiste Ide was restricted to one
long range effort which went over the bar. Rathmines finished the half with a break down the left wing but delayed the shot to allow the Colaiste Ide goalkeeper enough time to save.
In the second half both sides had a few chances. Rathmines failed to score following a good passing move down the left. At the other end the Rathmines goalkeeper had to make a save from close range to keep Rathmines in the game. Colaiste Ide had a free kick from the right hand side of the penalty area but it resulted in a tired effort from an otherwise impressive midfield performance by their No 13.
The score was 0-0 at fulltime and extra time of 5 minutes each way began. The Colaiste Ide No 13 was fouled in the penalty area and their No 11 finished well to score to the keepers right hand side. This was Colaiste Ide’s first goal of the day! Colaiste Ide should have extended their lead in the second half of extra time but the Rathmines goalkeeper managed to scramble the ball off the line.
Colaiste Ide won the final 1-0 and their captain John Comerford collected the Belgrove Cup from Donnchadh Clancy, Chairperson of the organising committee.
Many thanks to all of the participating teams for taking part and to the teachers for giving up their time.
