.This year’s event took place on the afternoon of Wednesday February 11th and saw the largest entry yet for this competition! A total of 23 acts represented seven schools and centres across the VEC in their bid to win first prize in the 4th Annual SCC battle of the Bands/ Talent Show.

After some light refreshment to calm the nerves and focus the mind Kylemore College took to the stage presenting six acts. Kicking the event off was the heavy metal rock of ‘Children of Blood’. This fearsome quartet were Craig – Drums, Sean – Bass, Declan & Jonothan – Guitars and they got quite a reaction with their original song ‘Scream’. Megan & Carl followed this with a Phil Collins song featuring a certain Gorilla a.k.a. Robert on drums. Camille continued with her passionate rendition of ‘The Weakness in Me’ and you would think it was Keisha White singing live in Kylemore. The contrasts continued with the ‘B Boys Clan’ - Mark & Barry complete with masks - and their hip hop track ‘Friends on Fire’. The mood was calmed a little by the haunting voice of Jessica and her band of Carl – Backing Vocals, Ryan – Bass & Ciaran – Drums on the Evanescence song ‘Bring Me To Life’. Aaron closed Kylemore’s set with the Ben E King classic ‘Stand By Me’ that got the audience clapping along once again.

Next into the spotlight was Adrian from Dominic St Youthreach Transition Centre. Now here was a performer well used to spotlights, limelights and any other light you could think of. His compilation ‘Jazz Piece’ on the piano accordion created quite a buzz. And what better way to follow such a buzz than with Tina Turner herself, Deborah who gave us her best in ‘The Best’. The final performer from Youthreach was Michael with his own original song titled ‘I’ll Never Cry’, which he sang to a mix of backing track and live guitar, no mean feat for any performer!

Colaiste Eoin from Finglas presented the song ‘You Are All That Matters’ performed by their band ‘Music Try Harder’. .

.Staying on the Northside, Colaiste Dhulaigh from Coolock began their set with ‘Breakeven’ featuring Louise on vocals accompanied by Partick on guitar. Patrick then powered into what seemed like the entire Beatles back catalogue for solo guitar – mind-blowing stuff!

Students from Ringsend Technical Institute were next in line and we were treated to a number of keyboard solos and duets from Nicole and Chelsea including the theme from ‘Titanic’ and ‘Let it Be’.

Larkin Community College just pipped Kylemore to the post for the largest number of acts and the quality of their music didn’t disappoint. The first of eight performers was Clara with the song ‘Finally’ followed by another vocal ‘When You’re Gone’ sung by Ashleigh. Jane gave us ‘Hallelujah’ and Keji completed Larkin’s first solo set with ‘Show Me the Meaning’. Now there is nothing like a current pop song to get a crowd going so when the previous four singers banded together to sing ‘Issues’ by ‘The Saturdays’ the level of excitement in the crowd went up yet again. The next act featured David (lead singer of last year’s winning band Merkurie) in a solo role on the song ‘Fade to Black’ – certainly a name to watch for the future. The final two acts from Larkin featured Laura and Niamh singing ‘My Immortal’ and Megan with Sarah's ‘Angel’.

The final performance of the day came from Margaret Aylward Community College and featured a mix of live dance and synthesised music creating a kind of hypnotic effect.

The hypnosis did not last though as everybody was eager to know the results and it was down once again to Mr. Kenny from Plunkett College dish out the points. Considering the high standard across all performances this was to prove a very very difficult task so much so that two prizes for second place and an amazing three prizes for first place. This goes to show how much work all of the students put into their performances and the high level of support that they received from their teachers and parents – well done to all!
