The most important date in the SCC's cultural calendar saw the cream of CDVEC's talent come to Kylemore College to battle it out for the Secondary 2010 Battle of the Bands title. There were seventeen acts from five CDVEC centres and there is no doubt that standards are rising every year. Highlights of the afternoon included a medley from 'Grease' given by Transition Centre Youthreach, bands from Kylemore and Colaiste Eoin, dancers from Larkin, a singing trio from Colaiste Dhulaigh as well as many talented young solo singers. Danny Kenny from Plunket College was the judge, and as always his comments encouraged all, not just the prizewinners.

First place was awarded to Jessica Curley for her amazing performance of Chris Brown’s 'Crawl'. Second place was given to a well deserved Fariz Zulkiffli for his Michael Jackson Dance Routine. The judges came to a decision that third place would be a tie, going to Thomas Byrne for his performance of 'Valerie' and Robert Kilpatrick for his performance of 'The Climb'. We look forward to hearing some of these talented young artists at our 75th Anniversary concert in Liberty Hall in April.

Jessica Curley – 'Crawl' (Chris Brown) : A delicate piano intro gave way to Jessica’s haunting voice. This cover was beautifully performed. The light piano emphasised Jessica’s stunning vocals to great effect.

Fariz Zulkiffli – Michael Jackson Dance Routine: Fancy Feet Fariz appeared on stage wearing a mask hiding his appearance soon to reveal the trademark aviators which Michael wore as he executed some of his signature moves with grace and style. A performance the man himself would be proud of.

Robert Kilpatrick – 'The Climb': Robert gave an intimate performance of Miley Cyrus’ ‘The Climb’, Accompanied by Claire Doran on piano. Another clear, confident performance of the show.

Thomas Byrne – 'Valerie' ( Amy Winehouse): Thomas performed an acoustic cover of Amy Winehouse’s Valerie. He had great stage presence and oozed with confidence. Accompanied by an acoustic guitar which complimented his voice.

M.A.D – 'The Mad Song' (Insolence): A high energy rock foursome, driven by a heavy drum beat complimented by ‘in your face’ guitar and bass. This was a well thought out instrumental executed with the confidence of a well rehearsed band. We can expect great things to come from M.A.D.

Gabriella Greplowski – 'Ironic' (Alanis Morisette): Gabriella’s performance was understated in its delivery which gave a delicate aspect to the song. An enjoyable performance which contrasted nicely with the first act.

Aaron O’Brien – I’m Yours (Jason Mraz): This was a four piece male vocal with acoustic guitar accompaniment. These four voices were well balanced and carried the song perfectly. This was an upbeat performance which the audience responded well to.

Carl Mc Connon – 'Land Down Under' (Men AT Work): Carl performed a cover of Land Down Under accompanied by acoustic guitar, A difference to the original, truly made it his own.

Linda Rigney – 'Falling Slowly/The Rose': Linda performed an instrumental of Glen Hansaard’s Falling Slowly. A more chilled atmosphere following Fariz’s dance routine. Linda came back on stage to perform one more song accompanied by two backing singers and a pianist. The Rose which was covered also by Westlife.

Must Try Harder – 'Life': The second full band of the event gave a heartfelt performance of ‘Life’. The vocals were delivered with soul and backed by some great harmonies. The piano accompaniment worked really well and added another dimension to this fantastic performance.

Amber Scott – 'Run' (Leona Lewis) : A great voice but nearly ended quickly with a loss of lyrics. Thankfully Amber recovered quickly with some roaring soprano vocals to finish her set.

Youthreach – Grease Medley: Youthreach gave an energetic performance of well known songs from the hit film ‘Grease’. This medley soon had the audience jiving in their seats.
